Urban Bat Project NYC currently offers two volunteer programs: Bioacoustics and Bat Transport.
Please note: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, or attend training with a legal parent or guardian, to participate
Bioacoustic volunteers help maintain the Urban Bat Project acoustic detector network currently spread across Brooklyn and Queens. This volunteer role is focused on performing simple "check-in" visits with a bat detector on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. These check-ins mostly consist of getting some information from the detector and entering it into a data sheet; however, volunteers need to be able to complete some physical tasks, like hammering a stake into the ground and tying adjustable knots, and be able to navigate to coordinates using their phone.
A smart phone is required to be a bioacoustics volunteer. We will be using the following apps:
Bat transport volunteers will help us assess and potentially transport injured bats that turn up in NYC during spring, summer, and fall.
